🍎 What is a kg to Newtons Conversion?

A kg to newtons conversion turns a mass in kilograms into the weight force that gravity produces on it, measured in newtons. The two units measure different things, so there is no fixed conversion factor like the one between inches and centimetres. The kilogram is the SI unit of mass, the amount of matter in an object. The newton is the SI unit of force, defined as the force that gives a 1 kg mass an acceleration of 1 m/s². To go from one to the other you multiply by the local gravitational acceleration: W = m g. On Earth, with the standard value g = 9.80665 m/s², every kilogram weighs 9.80665 N, so a 70 kg person has a weight of 686.47 N.

The conversion matters whenever a mass has to be turned into a load. Engineers convert the mass of a sign, a tank or a machine into newtons to size bolts, cables, shelves and foundations. Climbers and riggers compare the kilonewton rating on a carabiner or sling with the weight they will hang from it. Physics students need the weight to draw a free-body diagram, and spaceflight planners compare weight on the Moon, Mars and Jupiter. The same arithmetic runs in reverse when a load cell, spring balance or force gauge reports newtons and you want to know the mass behind the reading.

Several things are commonly mixed up. A kilogram is not a force, and a newton is not a mass. The old unit kilogram-force (kgf) is defined as exactly 9.80665 N, which is why a scale reading in kg looks like a force on Earth. Pound conversions add a second trap: the pound can be a mass (0.45359237 kg) or a force (pound-force, 4.4482216 N), and the two are numerically equal only at standard gravity. Finally, the rounded values 9.8 and 9.81 are fine for homework, but the exact standard value 9.80665 is what this calculator uses by default.

This calculator handles all three directions in one place. It converts kg to N, N to kg and pounds to lbf, lets you choose the Moon, Mars, Venus, Jupiter or your own g, and prints a table of the weight on every body at once. For the general relation F = m a use the force calculator, for the attraction between two masses use the gravitational force calculator, and for the support force on a slope see the normal force calculator.

📐 Formula

W  =  m × g     m  =  W ÷ g
W = weight force in newtons (N), where 1 N = 1 kg·m/s².
m = mass in kilograms (kg).
g = gravitational acceleration in m/s². Earth standard 9.80665, Moon 1.62, Mars 3.721, Venus 8.87, Jupiter cloud tops 24.79.
Pounds: 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg exactly, and 1 lbf = 0.45359237 × 9.80665 = 4.4482216152605 N, so weight in lbf = mass in lb × g ÷ 9.80665.
Kilogram-force: 1 kgf = 9.80665 N exactly, so kgf = N ÷ 9.80665.
Example: m = 70 kg and g = 9.80665 m/s² give W = 686.47 N.

📖 How to Use This Calculator

Steps

1
Choose a conversion. Pick kg to N when you know a mass and want its weight force, N to kg when you know a force, or lb to lbf when your mass is in pounds.
2
Enter the value. Type the mass in kilograms, the force in newtons or the mass in pounds. It must be greater than zero.
3
Choose the gravity. Earth is already set to 9.80665 m/s². Pick the Moon, Mars, Venus or Jupiter, or type any g. Choosing a body only fills g and never changes the number you typed.
4
Read the results and the table. The answer appears in N, kN, kgf and lbf with the working shown, and the table compares the same mass or force on five bodies.

💡 Example Calculations

Example 1 — A 70 kg Person on Earth

Weight force of a 70 kg person at standard gravity

1
W = m g = 70 × 9.80665.
2
W = 686.47 N, which is 0.6865 kN.
3
In other units this is 70.000 kgf, or 154.32 lbf.
W = 686.47 N (0.6865 kN)

Example 2 — The Same Person on the Moon

A 70 kg astronaut where g = 1.62 m/s²

1
W = 70 × 1.62 = 113.40 N.
2
Share of Earth weight = 1.62 ÷ 9.80665 = 16.5 percent.
3
That is 11.564 kgf or 25.493 lbf, but the mass is still 70 kg.
W = 113.40 N on the Moon

Example 3 — Newtons to kg from a Force Gauge

A spring balance reads 500 N on Earth

1
m = W ÷ g = 500 ÷ 9.80665.
2
m = 50.986 kg.
3
In pounds, 50.986 ÷ 0.45359237 = 112.40 lb.
Mass = 50.986 kg (112.40 lb)
Try this example →

Example 4 — 150 lb on Mars

A 150 lb mass weighed where g = 3.721 m/s²

1
Mass in kilograms = 150 × 0.45359237 = 68.039 kg.
2
W = 68.039 × 3.721 = 253.17 N.
3
In pound-force this is 253.17 ÷ 4.4482216 = 56.915 lbf.
Weight = 56.915 lbf = 253.17 N

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How do you convert kg to newtons?+
Multiply the mass in kilograms by the gravitational acceleration in m/s². On Earth, W = m × 9.80665, so 1 kg is 9.80665 N, 10 kg is 98.0665 N and 70 kg is 686.47 N. The result is a weight force, not a mass.
How many newtons is 1 kg?+
One kilogram weighs 9.80665 N at standard gravity, about 9.81 N. On the Moon it is 1.62 N and on Mars 3.721 N. The mass is 1 kg everywhere, but the force it exerts on a support depends on local g.
How do you convert newtons to kg?+
Divide the force in newtons by g. A 500 N force corresponds to 500 ÷ 9.80665 = 50.986 kg on Earth. Strictly, newtons are a force and kilograms a mass, so this gives the mass that would weigh that much under that gravity.
Is kg a unit of force?+
No. The kilogram is the SI unit of mass. The kilogram-force (kgf), equal to 9.80665 N, is an older unit of force that is still common in some engineering fields, which is one reason the two are confused.
What is the difference between mass and weight?+
Mass is the amount of matter and is measured in kilograms. Weight is the gravitational force on that mass, measured in newtons. Mass stays the same everywhere, weight changes with g, and an astronaut keeps the same mass in orbit but is nearly weightless.
How many newtons is 100 kg?+
On Earth, 100 kg weighs 980.665 N, about 0.98 kN. On the Moon the same mass weighs 162 N and on Mars 372.1 N.
How do you convert pounds to newtons?+
Convert pounds of mass to kilograms with 0.45359237, then multiply by g. For a weight stated in pounds-force, multiply by 4.4482216 instead. At standard gravity 1 lb of mass weighs exactly 1 lbf, which is 4.448 N.
Why do some people use 9.8 and others 9.81 or 9.80665?+
They are roundings of the same quantity. The standard value is exactly 9.80665 m/s², set by convention. Real local gravity ranges from about 9.78 at the equator to 9.83 at the poles, so using 9.81 is accurate to better than 0.1 percent for most work.
How much would 70 kg weigh on the Moon?+
Using g = 1.62 m/s², 70 kg weighs 113.4 N on the Moon, which is 16.5 percent of its 686.47 N Earth weight. The mass is still 70 kg.
What is a kilonewton and when do I use it?+
A kilonewton is 1000 N. It is used for larger loads such as crane hooks, rope ratings, bridge supports and climbing gear. A 70 kg person on Earth weighs 0.6865 kN.
Does altitude change the kg to N conversion?+
Slightly. Gravity falls with distance from Earth's center, by about 0.3 percent per 10 km of height near the surface, so the effect is negligible for everyday altitudes. Set a custom g if you need it.
