Oceanography Calculators - Seawater Properties, Stratification, and Waves
Physical oceanography describes the ocean with a few measurable quantities: how salty the water is, how warm it is, how much pressure it is under, and how those three set its density. From density follow stratification, the layering that separates warm surface water from cold deep water, and the waves and currents that move through it. CalculatorPod’s oceanography calculators cover the standard relationships oceanographers, marine technicians, and earth-science students use every day.

What These Calculators Cover
Seawater properties. The Practical Salinity Calculator converts a conductivity measurement into the unitless Practical Salinity Scale of 1978, the standard output of every CTD (conductivity, temperature, depth) instrument. The Seawater Density Calculator (EOS-80) turns salinity, temperature, and pressure into in-situ density with the UNESCO 1980 equation of state, and the TEOS-10 Calculator converts to the newer Absolute Salinity and Conservative Temperature variables.
Stratification. The Thermocline Depth Calculator and Mixed Layer Depth Calculator locate the two features that define the upper-ocean layering from a temperature profile, and the Buoyancy Frequency Calculator measures how strongly a water column resists vertical displacement.
Waves. The Ocean Wave Speed Calculator solves the linear wave dispersion relation for wavelength, phase speed, and group speed from a wave period and water depth.
Waves, tides, and currents. The Wave Energy and Power Calculator and Significant Wave Height Calculator turn wave measurements into the quantities used in forecasting and wave-energy resource assessment. The Tidal Force and Tidal Range and Spring-Neap Cycle calculators explain why tides rise and fall and how the Moon and Sun combine. Wind-driven flow is covered by the Ekman Layer Depth, Ekman Transport, and Geostrophic Current calculators.
Underwater acoustics. The Sound Speed in Seawater Calculator (Mackenzie), Acoustic Absorption Coefficient Calculator, and Sonar Range Equation Calculator cover how sound travels, fades, and is detected in seawater.
Ocean chemistry and heat. The Carbonate Chemistry and Ocean Acidification pCO2 calculators solve the seawater carbonate system, the Ocean Heat Content Calculator tracks stored heat, and the Freezing Point and Osmotic Pressure calculators cover physical properties of salt water.
Circulation, coasts, and hazards. The Upwelling Velocity and Thermohaline Circulation Strength calculators estimate vertical and overturning flow. The Coastal Erosion Rate, Longshore Drift Rate, and Tsunami Arrival Time calculators address shoreline change and wave hazards.
Who Uses These Calculators
Oceanography students use them to check coursework against standard formulas. Marine technicians use them to sanity-check CTD profiles and mooring data. Sailors, divers, and coastal engineers use the wave and density calculators for planning. All results are textbook-level estimates; research-grade work uses the full TEOS-10 toolbox and measured profiles.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between practical salinity and absolute salinity?
Practical salinity is a unitless number derived from conductivity under the 1978 scale, with no direct mass meaning. Absolute salinity, from TEOS-10, is the mass of dissolved material per kilogram of seawater in g/kg, and it is about 0.5 percent larger than practical salinity for standard seawater. The TEOS-10 calculator converts between them.
What is the thermocline and how is it different from the mixed layer?
The mixed layer is the well-stirred surface layer where temperature is nearly uniform. The thermocline is the layer just below it where temperature drops fastest with depth. Use the Mixed Layer Depth Calculator and the Thermocline Depth Calculator on the same profile to find both.
How much does seawater density vary?
Surface seawater density ranges from about 1020 to 1029 kg/m3, and pressure at depth adds roughly 4.5 kg/m3 per 1000 dbar. Those small differences drive ocean circulation. The Seawater Density Calculator gives density to five significant figures.
Why do deep-water waves travel faster than short waves?
In deep water, wave speed is proportional to the wave period, so long-period swell outruns short wind waves. In shallow water, speed depends only on depth. The Ocean Wave Speed Calculator shows the full transition.
