Korean Age Calculator
Find your Korean age, the international (man) age, and the year-counting age from your birth date.
🎂 What is the Korean Age Calculator?
The Korean age calculator converts your birth date into the traditional Korean age, alongside the international age used in most of the world and the year-counting age Korea uses for certain rules. It exists because Korea has, until recently, run several age systems at once, and the numbers can differ by a year or two.
People use it constantly when Korean culture meets the rest of the world. K-pop and K-drama fans want to know a star's "real" age versus their Korean age. Someone moving to or from Korea needs to reconcile the age on their ID with what friends call them. Learners of Korean meet the counting system early, because age shapes the language's levels of politeness. In each case, seeing all the numbers side by side clears up the confusion.
The traditional system works differently from what most people expect: you are 1 year old the moment you are born, and everyone gains a year together on January 1, not on their individual birthday. That is why a baby born on December 31 is considered 2 years old the very next day. International age, by contrast, starts at 0 and increases on your actual birthday. A third figure, year-counting age, is simply the reference year minus the birth year, and Korea uses it for things like school entry and military service.
A major change arrived in June 2023, when Korea adopted international age for all official and legal purposes. The traditional count lives on in everyday speech, so this tool shows every version from your exact birth date, with the working, so you always know which number applies.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
🔗 Related Calculators
How do you calculate Korean age?
Traditional Korean age is the reference year minus your birth year, plus 1. You are considered 1 year old at birth and gain a year every January 1. So someone born in 2000, in the year 2024, has a Korean age of 2024 - 2000 + 1 = 25, regardless of their birthday.
Why is Korean age different from international age?
Traditional Korean age counts the year of birth as year one and adds a year at New Year rather than on your birthday. International age counts completed years from birth, starting at 0. This makes the Korean age one or two years higher, depending on whether your birthday has passed this year.
Did Korea change how age is counted?
Yes. From June 2023, South Korea adopted the international age system for official and legal purposes, so ID, contracts, and medical records now use completed-years age. The traditional Korean age is still used casually in conversation, which is why this calculator shows both.
What is the difference between Korean age and man age?
Man (만) age is the Korean term for international age, the number of full years completed since birth. Traditional Korean age (sometimes called counting age) is man age plus one or two, because it starts at 1 and increases at New Year. Legal documents use man age.
How old am I in Korea if I was born in 2000?
In 2024, someone born in 2000 has a traditional Korean age of 25 (2024 - 2000 + 1). Their international age is 23 or 24 depending on whether their birthday has passed. This calculator shows both from your exact birth date and a reference date.
Does Korean age change on my birthday or New Year?
Traditional Korean age increases on January 1 for everyone at once, not on individual birthdays. So a baby born on December 31 becomes 2 in Korean age just one day later, on January 1. International age, by contrast, increases on your actual birthday.
What is year-counting age in Korea?
Year-counting age (연 나이) is the reference year minus the birth year, without the plus one. Korea uses it for some rules such as military service and school entry, and for age limits on alcohol and tobacco. It sits between international age and traditional Korean age.
Is Korean age still used after the 2023 law?
In casual conversation, yes, many Koreans still mention their traditional age out of habit. But for anything official, from hospital forms to contracts, the international age is now standard. Knowing both avoids confusion, which is exactly what this calculator provides.
How much higher is Korean age than international age?
Usually one to two years higher. If your birthday has already passed this year, Korean age is one year higher than international age. If your birthday has not yet come, it is two years higher, because the traditional system already added a year at New Year.
